They consist of many battery modules that together can store electricity and release it again when needed. The growth of wind and solar power is increasing variability in how much energy is available at any given moment. On sunny or windy days there is sometimes even too much electricity, while at other times there can be a shortage. Our electricity system must always be balanced between generation and consumption. That is why batteries play a key role: they capture surpluses so that renewable energy is not lost.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row&#8221; gap=&#8221;35&#8243; content_placement=&#8221;top&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Batteries can be connected <em>behind the meter <\/em>at, for example, a wind farm, a solar park, or at an end user such as an industrial site. They can then share the same connection. In addition, batteries can be connected <em>stand\u2011alone<\/em> (directly) to the grid. They receive their own connection from the grid operator, which connects them directly to the high\u2011voltage substation. This enables them to keep the electricity grid balanced by providing frequency support.
